Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
